Remembering Dada
How to describe sudhir mukherjee Dada? What was the attraction that kept me coming to Allahabad when I visited India for twenty-five years after first meeting him and Didi there in the winter of 1971? There is a quote: “for those who know, no explanation is necessary; for those who don’t know no explanation is possible.” This is how it was. Just as with Maharajji, if you never met Dada, there is no way to fully convey his wit, his charm, his intelligence, his utter devotion to Maharajji. The two books edited from his talks and writing, “By his Grace” and “The Near and the Dear”, give the best glimpse now of who he was.
Nevertheless, I must admit that in the first months that I knew sudhir mukherjee Dada, especially during the summer of 1972 when we were all at Kainchi, my heart and mind were totally focused on Maharajji. I can scarcely recall who were the others present when I was with him, all were shadows compared to the brilliant Sun that shone before us, blinding me to lesser lights.
Dada I saw more clearly because he was always there, standing beside Maharajji and translating into English what he said (with notable exceptions, as I later learned, when Maharajji’s humor was thought to be too earthy for tender western ears. He did, after all, call us the “bachchi” — The babies.)
When Maharajji was not present, sudhir mukherjee dada invariably sat with the westerners and explained ashram events and ceremonies, Indian customs, and proper behavior and dress. He also regaled us with stories about Maharajji from his own and other Indian devotees’ experiences over many years. He was our great source of information and understanding.

After Maharajji left his body in 1973, despite his own great grief and shock, sudhir mukherjee Dada again helped the stunned westerners to accept the unacceptable. I was one of those who came with Ram Dass from America for the ceremonies in Brindaban. By his grace, we had been spared the sight of his body being placed on the funeral pyre, yet this made his absence all the more unreal. Afterward, because another westerner had given me a large quantity of Mahrajji’s ashes and not knowing what to do with them. I traveled with my sister and Udbhav to Allahabad to seek Dada’s advice. He took us to the Prayag Sangam where we immersed the ashes. Yet this also seemed unconnected to the reality of Maharajji. Even now whenever I am at Kainchi or Brindaban, I constantly expect the door to his room to slam open and Maharajji to burst forth as he had always done.
I did not come back to India for six years after Maharajji’s death. sudhir mukherjee Dada mean-while visited us in America and continued to tell us the stories that helped keep Maharajji alive in our hearts and minds. His talks were tape-recorded and I eventually transcribed them and participated in editing what became the manuscript of “By His Grace.” This work brought me to India and Allahabad in 1979 and 1981, and the pattern of visiting at 4 Church Lane whenever I came to India was established. At first, Dada, Didi, Vibhuti, various dogs and boys, were the family. Later Azgar, Chandra Prakash, and then Ashoka, Didi’s sister, became part of the household. Nowadays, Satya and Suchi also grace the “red house.” All these, in varying ways, have made me so welcome that I have felt a true part of their family.

During these later years, I came to know Didi and then Ashoka so we shared daily activities thus by now they seem to be my own elder sisters. In her quiet way, Didi’s though fulness has been a model of the India tradition of caring for a guest. Whenever I visited, even the family food was prepared to suit my special requirements regardless of their own preferences. Each morning during these visits, Dada would create his flower offerings on Maharajji’s tucker and later in the day Didi would record each design in a watercolor painting. The rest of the household and the many visitors would always admire the unique expressions of their devotion.

Now, sadly for us, Dada has gone to join his Baba. I am sure they are laughing together somewhere, and we, too, will ultimately join in the fun. Meanwhile Maharajji’s “red house” continues in place, offering a loving welcome to all who come.
